Frequently Asked Questions

We understand that telehealth dermatology may be a new model of care for some patients. That’s why we’ve designed Domain Dermatology to offer the same high-quality, evidence-based care you would expect from a traditional face-to-face dermatology clinic — with the added convenience of accessing specialist advice from the comfort of your home.

Our secure systems, experienced dermatologists, and focus on clear communication ensure that every patient receives safe, professional, and personalised skin care, wherever they are in Australia.

Do I need a GP referral?

A referral is not required to book a consultation with Domain Dermatology. You are welcome to self-refer and access a specialist dermatologist directly via telehealth.

However, a valid referral is required to receive a Medicare rebate for your appointment. This can be:

  • A 12-month referral from a general practitioner (GP)

  • Or a 3-month referral from another specialist doctor

We encourage all patients to nominate their regular GP when booking. Regardless of referral status, we’re happy to provide your doctor with a letter summarising your consultation, diagnosis, and treatment plan — ensuring continuity of care and transparency across your healthcare team.

Is this covered by Medicare?

Yes — if you have a valid referral at the time of your appointment, you will be eligible for a Medicare rebate for your dermatology consultation.

To receive the rebate:

  • Make sure your referral is current and valid

  • Submit it at the time of booking or upload it before your appointment

If you do not have a referral, you're still welcome to book, but the consultation will be billed privately without a Medicare subsidy. If needed, we can guide you through the process of obtaining a referral in advance of your appointment.

What areas do you service?

Domain Dermatology provides telehealth dermatology services Australia-wide — including metropolitan centres, regional towns, and remote areas.

Our priority is equitable access. Whether you're in Melbourne, Mildura, or Mount Isa, you can receive expert skin care from a consultant dermatologist without needing to travel.

Will I see a real dermatologist?

Yes. All appointments are conducted by fully qualified, Australian-trained consultant dermatologists who are fellows of the Australasian College of Dermatologists (FACD). You will never be seen by a nurse, junior doctor, or non-specialist provider.

What if my skin problem needs a procedure?

Some skin conditions require procedures such as biopsies, laser, or surgery — which cannot be completed via telehealth. If this is the case, your dermatologist will refer you to a trusted local dermatologist or dermatology clinic in your area for in-person care.

We’ll ensure your referral is clear, targeted, and includes all relevant clinical notes so you receive seamless follow-up.

Will I receive a prescription if needed?

Yes. If your dermatologist recommends medication as part of your treatment plan, prescriptions will be sent to you electronically using eScript. This allows you to receive an SMS or email with a secure link to access your script, which can be filled at any Australian pharmacy.

There’s no need to pick up a paper script in person — your treatment can begin as soon as you collect your medication. If you require a compounded medication or specific pharmacy referral, we’ll provide tailored instructions.

What about pathology requests, referrals, or other paperwork?

Any necessary paperwork — including pathology requests, specialist referrals, and patient information handouts — will be sent directly to you via SMS or email immediately after your appointment.

You can then take these to your local pathology centre or share them with your GP as needed.

How are follow-ups arranged?

Our administrative team will contact you immediately after your appointment to arrange any necessary follow-up appointments. Whether your dermatologist recommends a routine review, treatment response check-in, or in-person referral, we’ll ensure all logistics are handled smoothly and without delay.

What does it cost?

Domain Dermatology operates on a prepaid model. The consultation fee is paid prior to your appointment to allow:

  • Your dermatologist to review all submitted information and photographs in advance

  • Your appointment time to be confirmed and reserved

  • Efficient, on-time consultations

Pricing is transparent and outlined during the booking process. If you have a valid referral, you may be eligible for a Medicare rebate after your consultation.

How do appointments work?

  • Appointments take place via secure video conferencing on your smartphone, tablet, or computer. A private link will be sent to your device in advance of your appointment.

  • If required, telephone consultations may be arranged in exceptional circumstances — but only if high-quality photographs have been submitted in advance. This ensures your dermatologist has the best possible clinical information to provide accurate advice and treatment.
