Meet Dr. Will Cranwell, Medical Director of Domain Dermatology

Dr. Will Cranwell is a consultant dermatologist and Fellow of the Australasian College of Dermatologists, with broad expertise in medical and surgical dermatology for both adults and children. His subspecialty interests include acne, rosacea, hair and scalp disorders, and inflammatory skin conditions. He is highly experienced managing eczema and dermatitis, psoriasis and vitiligo. Dr. Cranwell is committed to providing personalised care, ensuring safe and effective treatments for his patients, and helping them achieve long-lasting, meaningful results.

 

As the Medical Director of Domain Dermatology, he leads the clinic’s telehealth dermatology services, ensuring patients receive expert care from the comfort of their homes or convenience of their workplace.

Telehealth Expertise

Dr. Cranwell is not only an experienced dermatologist but also a leader in teledermatology. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he played a pivotal role in managing telehealth clinics at major tertiary referral hospitals, including Alfred Hospital and Monash Medical Centre.

 

This experience has made him particularly adept at providing high-quality care remotely, giving patients access to expert dermatology services no matter where they are in Australia. Whether for routine consultations or more complex skin conditions, Dr. Cranwell ensures that telehealth consultations are as thorough, compassionate, and effective as in-person visits.

 

His leadership in teledermatology means that Domain Dermatology is uniquely positioned to offer accessible, high-quality dermatology to patients across Australia, including in metropolitan, regional, and remote areas. By offering telehealth consultations, Dr. Cranwell ensures that all patients, from urban centres to more remote locations, can receive ongoing care, guidance, and treatment.

Extensive Training and International Experience

Dr. Cranwell completed his dermatology specialist training at some of Melbourne’s most prestigious tertiary referral hospitals, including The Alfred Hospital, The Royal Melbourne Hospital, St Vincent’s Hospital, and Box Hill Hospital.

 

In 2020, he was awarded the Australasian College of Dermatologists Research Fellowship, which allowed him to train at the renowned St John’s Institute of Dermatology in London. There, he worked alongside world-leading experts in complex eczema, psoriasis, hidradenitis suppurativa, cutaneous lymphoma, immunobullous conditions, photodermatology, and paediatric dermatology.

Academic Achievements and Recognition

Dr. Cranwell graduated with Honours from Monash University, holding dual degrees in Medicine and Biomedical Science, and was awarded the prestigious Harry Hindlip Green Prize in Medicine. He also holds a Master of Public Health and Tropical Medicine.

 

His performance in his training led to him receiving the Founders’ Medal, awarded for the highest overall score in Australia in the Procedural Fellowship Examinations, which included dermatological surgery, injectables, lasers, and topical treatments for skin cancer.

 

Additionally, Dr. Cranwell was the recipient of the Adrian Johnson Memorial Prize for his work as the primary author of the Australian Expert Consensus Statement for the treatment of alopecia areata, which was published in the Australasian Journal of Dermatology.

International Recognition and Clinical Trials

Dr. Cranwell is widely published in both Australian and international medical journals and regularly speaks at local and international dermatology seminars and conferences.

 

He is also a peer reviewer for prestigious journals, including the British Journal of Dermatology and the Journal of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology.

 

His contributions to dermatology extend to clinical research, where he has been a sub-investigator in international clinical trials investigating treatments for psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, vitiligo, blistering skin conditions and skin cancer.

Education and Mentorship

Dr. Cranwell is passionate about advancing dermatological education and is actively involved in training the next generation of dermatologists. He provides mentorship to dermatology trainees, junior doctors, and general practitioners, sharing his knowledge and experience to improve dermatology practice across Australia and internationally.

He regularly presents at education sessions for general practitioners, with particular interests in management of acne and photoageing.

This designation indicates that Dr Will Cranwell has completed extensive specialist training and examinations in dermatology, and is officially recognised as a consultant dermatologist in Australia. Fellowship of the Australasian College of Dermatologists (FACD) is the only qualification that allows doctors to be registered as dermatology specialists with AHPRA.

Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery with Honours

Dr Will Cranwell completed his medical degree at Monash University, graduating with Honours. This degree provided the foundation for his clinical training and development as a medical practitioner.

Bachelor of Medical Science with Honours

Dr Will Cranwell completed an Honours degree in Biomedical Science as part of his medical training at Monash University. This research-focused year provided experience in scientific investigation and contributed to his interest in evidence-based dermatology.

Master of Public Health and Tropical Medicine

Dr Will Cranwell completed postgraduate studies in Public Health and Tropical Medicine at James Cook University, which expanded his understanding of population health, disease prevention, and the broader factors that influence health outcomes in diverse communities.
