Seborrhoeic Dermatitis Treatment

Struggling with flaky skin or stubborn dandruff? Seborrhoeic dermatitis is a common skin condition that affects both children and adults — and help is available. At Domain Dermatology, we offer expert care for seborrhoeic dermatitis, including diagnosis, management and long-term support.

What Is Seborrhoeic Dermatitis?

Seborrhoeic dermatitis (also known as seborrhoeic eczema) is a type of long-term skin inflammation that typically affects areas rich in oil (sebum) glands — such as the scalp, face, chest and upper back.

In adults and teens, it often appears as greasy, red, scaly patches on the scalp (commonly leading to dandruff), around the nose, eyebrows, ears, or on the upper chest and back. In babies, it presents as cradle cap — a harmless but sometimes thick yellow crusting on the scalp.

Common Symptoms

If you’re dealing with seborrhoeic dermatitis, you might notice:

  • Flaky, white or yellow scales on the scalp, eyebrows, or around the nose

  • Greasy patches of skin

  • Redness and irritation on affected areas

  • Itching or mild burning sensation

In babies, cradle cap can sometimes look crusty or greasy, and while it usually doesn’t bother them, it may need a little help to clear.

What Causes Seborrhoeic Dermatitis?

The exact cause isn’t fully understood, but experts believe seborrhoeic dermatitis is linked to an immune reaction to a yeast called Malassezia, which naturally lives on the skin. It’s not caused by poor hygiene, and it isn’t contagious.

Certain factors can make seborrhoeic dermatitis more likely or more severe, including:

  • Oily skin

  • Stress or illness

  • Cold or dry weather

  • Medical conditions like Parkinson’s disease or HIV

When to Seek Help

While mild dandruff can often be managed at home, you should see a doctor or dermatologist if:

  • Your symptoms aren’t improving with over-the-counter treatments

  • The condition is causing embarrassment or discomfort

  • The skin becomes painful, swollen or infected

  • Symptoms are worsening or spreading

How Is Seborrhoeic Dermatitis Diagnosed?

Diagnosis is usually straightforward. A doctor or dermatologist will examine your skin and ask about your symptoms. In most cases, no tests are needed. Occasionally, a skin scraping may be taken to rule out other conditions or infections.

Seborrhoeic Dermatitis Treatment Options

At Domain Dermatology, we provide tailored treatment plans to help bring your skin under control and keep it that way.

For Adults and Teens:

  • Anti-dandruff shampoos with ingredients like ketoconazole, selenium sulfide, or coal tar

  • Topical antifungal creams (to reduce the yeast)

  • Mild corticosteroid creams (to calm inflammation)

  • Non-steroid creams

  • Medicated cleansers or exfoliating face washes (such as salicylic acid) to remove scaling

  • Occasionally, an oral antifungal medication can induce clearance for resistant or widespread cases

Treatment may need to be used regularly during flare-ups and then as-needed to prevent recurrence.

For Babies (Cradle Cap):

  • Soften crusts with baby oil or olive oil

  • Gently clean with baby shampoo and a soft brush or cloth

  • In some cases, a mild steroid or antifungal cream may be recommended by your doctor

Can It Be Prevented?

While seborrhoeic dermatitis can’t always be prevented, flare-ups can be managed with ongoing skin care and treatment. Keeping the skin clean, avoiding triggers (such as harsh products or stress), and following your dermatologist’s advice can help reduce recurrence.
